Comps
Comps (short for comparables) are the recent sold prices of the same or a very similar item, used to decide what something is actually worth. On eBay you find comps by searching the item and filtering to Sold listings; on Facebook Marketplace you scan active and recently-removed listings. Comps are the difference between guessing and knowing. A reseller who checks sold comps before buying rarely overpays, and a reseller who does not is gambling. Checking comps on your phone while you shop is the core discipline of the whole business.
Comps, short for comparables, are the recent sold prices of the same item or a very close match. They are the foundation of every buying decision a reseller makes. Before you hand over money for anything, the question is not 'does this look valuable?' but 'what has this exact item actually sold for recently?' Comps answer that question with data instead of hope. A reseller who checks comps consistently is running a business. One who buys on gut feeling is gambling.
The most reliable place to pull comps is eBay's Sold listings filter. Search the exact item - brand, model, and key details - then filter to Sold items. This shows you what buyers actually paid, not what optimistic sellers are asking. Asking prices are noise; sold prices are signal. For local-only items like gym equipment or large furniture, scan active Facebook Marketplace listings and note which ones disappear quickly (those sold near their asking price) versus which sit for weeks (overpriced). The pattern of what moves tells you the real local market.
Comps also protect you from two expensive mistakes. The first is overpaying because an item looks impressive but has weak resale demand. The second is walking away from a real deal because you did not realize what you were looking at. Checking comps on your phone while you shop - a 30-second search before you commit - is the single habit that separates profitable resellers from people who lose money. The Resellers Club teaches a fast comp-check routine so you can verify any item in under a minute standing in the aisle, and set your buy ceiling from the median sold price.
