Buy Ceiling

The buy ceiling is the highest price you are willing to pay for an item while still clearing a profit worth your time. It is calculated from the sold comp, not from the seller's asking price. A common rule is to cap your buy at 40 to 50 percent of what the item reliably sells for. If comps show a Scotty Cameron putter sells for $300, a 40 percent ceiling means you will not go above roughly $120 to acquire it. Everything below that ceiling is negotiable; everything above it is a walk-away.

The point of setting a ceiling before you talk to the seller is to keep emotion out of the transaction. Sellers are often friendly, items are often shiny, and it is easy to talk yourself into 'just $20 more' in the moment. That $20 comes straight out of your profit, and across a month of sourcing it adds up to real money. A pre-set ceiling is a rule you made when you were thinking clearly, and it protects you from decisions made when you are excited. Write it down or hold it firmly in your head before you make an offer.

The 40 to 50 percent band exists because reselling has real costs beyond the buy price: platform fees (eBay takes roughly 13 percent, Facebook Marketplace local is free), shipping, packing materials, and your time listing and meeting buyers. If you pay 50 percent of comp and lose 15 percent to fees and shipping, your margin is already tight. Paying less than your ceiling is always better - the best resellers aim well under it and let sellers who want a fast cash sale meet them there.
